Dr. Adam Burgener

Biography

Adam Burgener is a renowned researcher in the academic field of global health, vaccines, and infectious diseases. He is the Adel Mahmoud Professor of Global Health and Vaccines at Case Western Reserve University and director of the Center for Global Health and Diseases. His research team investigates the complex interplay of mucosal immunity and susceptibility to infection. Dr. Burgener's career spans decades, during which he has made significant contributions to the field of global health, particularly in understanding mechanisms contributing to mucosal immunity and sexually transmitted infections. His groundbreaking work includes the discovery that the microbiome affects the efficacy of antiretroviral-based pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention in women. In addition to his role at Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Burgener is a co-leader of the Population Cancer Prevention Program at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center and holds an academic appointment at the University of Manitoba in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences. He completed his PhD in Microbiology/Biotechnology at the University of Manitoba and earned a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology. After completing post-doctoral work at the National Microbiology Lab in Canada, Dr. Burgener has remained passionate about improving global health outcomes and has earned widespread recognition through numerous accolades.
