Biography

Adam Cohen works at the interface of physics, chemistry, and biology. His laboratory develops new physical tools to study molecules and cells. The Cohen Lab has developed fluorescent voltage-indicating proteins that enable optical mapping of neural activity, opening the door to all-optical electrophysiology and large-scale mapping of brain activity. The lab has also studied fundamental aspects of chiral light-matter interactions, predicting theoretically and demonstrating experimentally the existence of 'superchiral' light. Cohen holds PhD degrees from the University of Cambridge (UK) in theoretical physics and Stanford University in experimental biophysics. He has been recognized as a top technological innovator under the age of 35 by Technology Review Magazine and named one of the 'Brilliant Ten' young scientists by Popular Science. He has received the NIH New Innovator Award and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from President Obama.
