Biography

Adam J. Engler is a Professor and Chair of the Shu Chien-Gene Lay Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego). He has been a faculty member since 2008 and holds the Kenneth Bowles Endowed Chair. Engler, who earned his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, also completed postdoctoral training at Princeton University. His research focuses on the physical and chemical properties of the extracellular matrix and how these influence cell function and genetic mechanisms involved in diseases, particularly in the contexts of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Engler has published more than 130 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has received significant recognition for his work, including mid-career and young investigator awards from the International Society for Matrix Biology (2008), Biomedical Engineering Society (2008, 2023), American Society for Matrix Biology (2014), and the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (2015). Additionally, he received the NIH New Innovator Award in 2009 and has been named a Fellow of several esteemed organizations, including the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (2018) and the Biomedical Engineering Society (2021).
