Biography

Adam Gustafson completed his Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Arts at Ohio University in 2011, focusing on the role music plays in shaping social identities through theatricality and musical performance. In 2009, his article "Creativity Crash: Opera U.S. Great Depression" was published in OPERA America Magazine. He has delivered papers on a variety of topics relating to theatricality, marching bands, and nineteenth-century American concert singing. He earned a Master of Music in Composition from the Chicago College of Performing Arts, where his compositions have been performed and recorded by choral groups and soloists across the United States. In 2012, his song cycles, Morning Commute and Sarai's Dilemma, were selected for commercial recording by Vox 3 Collective in Chicago, which led to the group being awarded for Sarai's Dilemma as a New Composition for the 2011-2012 season. He is an active professional musician and music director; as a baritone, he has sung with numerous choirs, including the Bach Week Festival Chorus in Evanston, IL, and has served as a soloist for the Springfield Choral Society in Springfield, IL. He has also worked as a music director and guitarist with regional theater companies throughout the Midwest, such as Bailiwick Theater and the Jedlicka Performing Arts Center in Chicago, IL.
