Biography

Adam Konopka is an Assistant Professor at the UW Comprehensive Diabetes Center, affiliated with the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research focuses on whole-body musculoskeletal metabolism and aging, particularly in relation to insulin resistance, skeletal muscle health, and osteoarthritis. Dr. Konopka employs a translational research approach to elucidate the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis and treatment of aging and age-related diseases. One of the primary objectives of his laboratory is to take findings from tissue culture models, rodents, and non-human primates and translate them to human clinical trials. Over the past eight years, he has conducted numerous clinical trials aimed at testing potential strategies, such as metformin, to promote healthy aging in insulin-resistant and insulin-sensitive populations. His team utilizes sophisticated measures for glucose control in these studies, including hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamps, oral glucose tolerance tests, mixed-meal tolerance tests, and continuous glucose monitoring, to observe participants across a range of demographics, including lean and obese individuals from both young and old age groups.
