Biography

Adam Lyons is a specialist in Japanese religions. He obtained his PhD in Religious Studies from Harvard University. His first book, 'Karma Punishment: Prison Chaplaincy Japan', is a study of prison religion in Japan. He is currently working on a study of the new religious movement Tenrikyō, and his research interests include Japanese Buddhism, Shintoism, Christianity, and new religious movements. His expertise is focused on the modernization of Japanese Buddhism, the formation of Shinto sects, as opposed to state Shinto, and the indigenization of Christianity in Japan.
