Biography

Adam Martin completed his PhD at the University of Western Australia in 2011 under Professor Colin Raston, specializing in supramolecular chemistry. He began his postdoctoral work at the University of Nottingham with Professor Martin Schröder, where he synthesized novel ligands for new metal-organic frameworks. In 2013, he transitioned to the University of New South Wales, working with Professor Pall Thordarson to explore the design rules for peptide hydrogels. In 2016, he was awarded the NHMRC-ARC Dementia Research Fellowship, focusing on scaffold development for culturing sensitive primary neurons to gain insights into the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. Since being promoted to Lecturer in early 2018, he has taken on a leadership role in the Peptides and Proteins Group at the Dementia Research Centre, Macquarie University. His research interests include the structure-property relationships of short, self-assembling peptides and their application in designing biocompatible hydrogel scaffolds for tissue engineering to support sensitive primary neurons. Current projects include the development of 3D neuronal cell culture scaffolds, functionalization of hydrogels with ECM-ligating peptides, and controlling the temporal degradation of hydrogel scaffolds for biological profiling.
