Biography

Professor Adam Sobey is the Chair of Data-Centric Engineering at the University of Southampton, leading the Maritime Engineering Group. He completed his MEng in Aerospace Engineering and Astronautics in 2006 before transitioning into the Maritime Engineering group for his PhD in Concurrent Engineering Context for the Composite Leisure Boatbuilding Industry in 2010. He became a Research Fellow in 2009, leading the Lloyd's Register and Ministry of Defence Centre of Excellence in Marine Structures. Professor Sobey's research focuses on the application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning within engineering, particularly in reducing emissions and enhancing safety. He has served as a visiting scientist at the Institute of High Performance Computing from 2014 to 2017 before returning to the University of Southampton for a lectureship in 2018, later becoming an Associate Professor in 2020 and achieving his Professorship in 2022. His contributions to the field were recognized when he received the Royal Institute of Naval Architects Jeom Paik award for the best paper on structures under 30 in 2015, which detailed improvements in structural safety for composite ships. He is also an editor for Data-Centric Engineering and serves as an Associate Editor for Ship Offshore Structures. Amidst these roles, he directs the Centre of Excellence in Data-Centric Engineering for Clean Oceans at the University, coordinating efforts to advance decarbonization initiatives in marine engineering.
