Biography

Adam J. Szubin joined the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) faculty as a Distinguished Practitioner-in-Residence in 2017. Previously, he served as the Acting Secretary of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence at the U.S. Treasury Department where he led policy, enforcement, regulatory, and intelligence functions aimed at identifying and disrupting financial support for international terrorist organizations and other national security threats. During his time at Treasury, he also held the position of Director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) from 2006 to 2015 and was a Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence. Prior to joining the Treasury, Szubin served as Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General at the Department of Justice and worked as a trial attorney in the Civil Division. He began his legal career clerking for Judge Ronald Gilman on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit from 1999 to 2000. Szubin earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1999 and a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from Harvard College in 1995. He is also a Fulbright scholar.
