Biography

Before joining the Art Gallery of Ontario in 2023, Adam Welch held various curatorial positions at the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Museum at the University of Toronto, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He has worked on notable curatorial projects including the 2022 retrospective on General Idea, as well as exhibitions like Joseph Beuys (2015–2017) and Advent Abstraction (2016–2017). His contributions also include curating Indigenous Canadian galleries at the National Gallery of Canada in 2017. Welch holds a Master’s degree from Columbia University and a PhD in Art History from the University of Toronto. His dissertation, titled 'Borderline Research: Art Across the Canada-United States Border, 1965–1975,' investigated the intricate relationships among artists, curators, and dealers along the Canadian-American border.
