Biography

Addie McGowan is a Research Fellow at the School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh. Her research interests are interdisciplinary, particularly focusing on digital platforms, tourism, advertising, market studies, and digital culture. She developed her interests during her doctoral research from 2019 to 2023, which was funded through a joint studentship with the Future Cities group at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow. Her PhD thesis examined how the sharing economy, specifically home-sharing platforms like Airbnb, co-produces urban knowledge and influences the experience of place through digital social infrastructures. In addition to her doctoral work, Addie is involved in the ESRC funded AdTech Research Project led by Donald MacKenzie, which explores the material politics of online advertising and the tensions surrounding the daily experiences of practitioners in this field. Prior to her PhD, she earned an MSc in Digital Society and a BA in Sociology and Communication from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX. With nearly a decade of experience in digital marketing, Addie has a robust background as a digital strategist, which has informed her return to academia to address sociological questions related to platforms and data.
