Dr. Adel Iskandar

Biography

Adel Iskandar is an Associate Professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University. His academic work primarily focuses on global communication, media, and identity politics. Iskandar has authored, edited, or contributed to various significant publications including "Egypt Flux: Essays Unfinished Revolution" and "Al-Jazeera: Story Network that Rattling Governments Redefining Modern Journalism." His research also encompasses participatory methods that support knowledge production, particularly through digital platforms like "Jadaliyya" and academic podcasting "Status." Iskandar's community research aims to highlight grassroots creative production in the Middle East, especially in response to the rise of extremism, and includes projects documenting the experiences of Syrian newcomer women. Before joining Simon Fraser University, he taught at the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies at Georgetown University, Washington, DC, where he engaged with a diverse array of topics within communication and cross-cultural studies. Iskandar is also actively involved in examining the political role of memes and the use of digital satire, as well as producing monographs that contribute to the understanding of contemporary transculturalism. His extensive lecturing has reached various universities worldwide, making significant impacts in the field of media studies and communication research.
