Biography

Aditya Balasubramanian is a Senior Lecturer in the School of History, College of Arts and Social Sciences at the Australian National University. His research focuses on the political economy and environmental aspects of modern Indian history. He is the author of 'Free Economy: Swatantra Opposition Politics in Democratic India' published in 2023 by Princeton University Press. Aditya's scholarly work has received recognition, including being shortlisted for the 2022 Elder Prize in Social Sciences and longlisted for the 2024 Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay Prize by the New India Foundation. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles exploring various facets of Indian political economy from the 1940s to the 1970s, including topics such as famine in Travancore and early Hindu nationalist economic thought. Currently, Aditya is engaged in projects on environmental economic history related to roadbuilding and transport in India, as well as researching the Bhopal Gas Tragedy of 1984. His teaching has been recognized with nominations for university-wide prizes, and he has actively contributed to the academic community as the Deputy Director of the ANU's Center for Environmental History and as a founding member of the ANU Capitalism Studies Network. Aditya holds degrees from Harvard College and Trinity College, Cambridge.
