Adrian Callaghan's research focuses on the physical exchange processes occurring at the ocean-atmosphere interface. In particular, he is concentrated on understanding the occurrence and severity of air-entraining breaking waves using data collected from both laboratory and field experiments. He has a keen interest in how turbulence in the upper ocean responds to atmospheric forcing, including wind stress and buoyancy fluxes, in relation to wave breaking. He joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London as a senior lecturer in November 2017, having previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher and Assistant Project Scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He completed his Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography at the National University of Ireland, Galway, in 2009. He leads a research group looking to add curious and motivated students and researchers who are interested in ocean waves, air-sea interaction, and small-scale fluid dynamics.
