Born to World War refugee parents in Ukraine, Adrian Ivakhiv grew up in Toronto, Canada. He is currently the J. S. Woodsworth Chair in the Department of Global Humanities at Simon Fraser University, after having served as a Professor of Environmental Thought and Culture at the University of Vermont. Ivakhiv coordinates the EcoCultureLab and has previously taught at York University and the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. His academic work includes fellowships at Freie Universität Berlin and Taras Shevchenko National University in Kyiv, with fieldwork conducted on eco-cultural conflicts in places such as the U.S. Southwest, British Isles, and maritime eastern Canada. His publications include books on topics that intersect environmental humanities and media studies, such as “Claiming Sacred Ground: Pilgrims and Politics in Glastonbury and Sedona” and “Ecologies of the Moving Image: Cinema, Affect, Nature.” He has received various academic honors and has presented his research internationally. Additionally, he has interests in composing music and producing plays as part of his artistic expression. Ivakhiv is currently accepting MA students interested in topics related to the humanities, arts, environment, and ecology.
