Adrian Reyes-Prieto was born in Mexico City and obtained his B.S. in Biology in 1997 followed by a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences in 2002 from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). After completing his graduate studies, he undertook postdoctoral research in both Mexico and the United States at institutions including the University of Iowa and Rutgers University from 2002 to 2009. He joined the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in 2009 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2015. His research primarily focuses on the evolution of photosynthetic organelles, microbial organelle comparative genomics, and the evolutionary history of microbial eukaryotes. Reyes-Prieto's research group employs cellular and molecular techniques to investigate symbiotic associations and the genomic mechanisms underpinning the establishment of plastids and chloroplasts through endosymbiosis. He is currently collaborating with colleagues in the Biology Department to study bacterial and algal diversity in New Brunswick's freshwater coastal environments.
