Biography

Adrian Salic is a Professor of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School. His research focuses on the mechanisms involved in cell-cell signaling, particularly within the vertebrate Hedgehog pathway, which is crucial for both the development of embryos and the maintenance of adult stem cells. Unregulated Hedgehog signaling has been implicated in various human cancers. Through the application of biochemistry and chemical biology, Dr. Salic aims to elucidate how vertebrate cells send and respond to Hedgehog signals. His work investigates the activation of Hedgehog proteins and their unique posttranslational modifications, including the attachment of cholesterol and palmitate. Furthermore, he aims to uncover the relationship between Hedgehog signaling and Gli transcription factors, exploring how their interactions are regulated within primary cilia. By using live-cell imaging, Dr. Salic studies the spatial and temporal dynamics of Hedgehog signaling and its regulatory mechanisms. His laboratory is also focused on developing novel chemical probes for high-resolution imaging of biological molecules, including proteins and phospholipids.
