Dr. Afia Ali

Biography

Afia B. Ali is a Professor of Neuroscience at the UCL School of Pharmacy with over 20 years of experience in education and research. Her research portfolio spans multi-disciplinary projects focusing on neurological disorders such as epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease. Prof. Ali has made significant contributions to understanding the mechanisms of synaptic communication and is involved in the pre-clinical investigation of potential new drugs. She leads initiatives to promote innovative teaching methods for healthcare professionals and neuroscientists, striving to improve educational standards and inclusivity. Ali obtained her first-class honors degree in Physiology from the University of Westminster in 1995, followed by a PhD in Neuroscience from University College London in 1998. Her doctoral research, supervised by Professor Alex Thomson, focused on the physiology, pharmacology, and morphology of single axon connections from inhibitory interneurons in the adult rat hippocampus. She was awarded the Wellcome International Prize Travelling Fellowship to work in Paris, where she investigated kainate receptors. In 2005, she moved to the Department of Pharmacology at The School of Pharmacy, University of London, and has since held various roles, including Lectureship in 2009 and promotion to Associate Professor in 2013.
