Dr. Afsheen Nasir

Biography

Afsheen Nasir is a Postdoctoral Research Scholar in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Yale University. Her research interests focus on disparities related to gender, race, and socioeconomic status in outcomes of aortic cardiac diseases. As a co-investigator at Women's Health Research at Yale, she has led pilot projects examining disparities in elective and emergent aortic surgery outcomes while investigating the underlying causes and surveillance patterns using big data at Yale Imaging Centers. She is particularly curious about the role of pregnancy and female reproductive hormones in the progression of cardiac diseases. Dr. Nasir has played a pivotal role in developing a structured surgical imaging database for her research team focused on aortic conditions. Her work has been showcased at conferences including the American Heart Association and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Nasir also serves as a peer reviewer for scientific journals and her research is deeply informed by the healthcare disparities she has observed while working in clinical settings in her home country. Outside of her research, she is dedicated to expanding her understanding of cultural issues and navigating various challenges in scientific careers, including stereotype threat and imposter syndrome. She enjoys physical fitness activities and is committed to broadening her movement capabilities.
