Biography

Agnieszka Joniak-Lüthi is a professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, where she has been since September 2020, leading the German-language program. She obtained her Master’s degree in Chinese Studies from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland and a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Bern. Her academic journey includes lecturing and conducting research at various universities, including Bern, St. Gallen, Zurich, Fribourg, LMU Munich, and institutions in China like Xinjiang University and Sichuan University. She has served as a visiting researcher at prestigious universities including Washington, Oslo, and Cambridge. Her primary research focus is China, particularly in areas such as nationalism, ethnicity, and settler colonialism. From 2018 to 2023, she led a team project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation that explored the anthropology of infrastructure in China's Inner Asian borders, linked to the Belt and Road Initiative. Additionally, she has been active in promoting Open Access to scientific publications and is the Managing Editor of the diamond Open Access journal Roadsides.
