Agnieszka Pasieka is a sociocultural anthropologist whose research revolves around two complementary axes. The first center on the question of difference in a broad sense and examines the relationship between conceptions of pluralism as defined and implemented by institutions at the top and those emerging from below the social pyramid. It targets political mobilization, activism, and social movements, focusing on how various social actors mobilize and the alternative world they envisage. Before joining the Université de Montréal, she worked as a principal researcher at the University of Vienna and held lecturer and visiting professor positions at several universities, including Central European University, Bayreuth, Dartmouth College, and Yale University. She joined the Department in September 2024 and is working on establishing a laboratory focused on social movements. She is also launching two new research projects: the first focusing on activism around climate change, including the previously underexplored issue of far-right environmentalism, addressing the contrasting ideas and practices of solidarity in the context of social welfare cuts.
