Ahlam Chemlali's research focuses on migration, borders, and European externalization policies, with a particular emphasis on the human consequences of such approaches. Her work examines how Europe manages migration within its own territory, the implications of third-country partnerships, and the outsourcing of asylum procedures. Chemlali’s studies delve into the intersection of migration, smuggling, violence, border governance, political decision-making, and the everyday realities faced by people who are moving or stranded during transit. Her research is grounded in extensive fieldwork in North Africa, particularly in Tunisia and Libya, and her regional expertise spans the MENA region and the Mediterranean. Her specializations include European migration border policies, border management, violence and smuggling networks, the human rights impacts of border governance, and the lived experiences of migrants in transit through North Africa.
