Dr. Ahmara Ross

Biography

Ahmara Gibbons Ross holds an MD and PhD, mainly focusing on the genetic underpinnings of glaucoma and the development of innovative treatments for optic neuropathies. She trained in both Neuro-Ophthalmology and Glaucoma, allowing her to cultivate a distinctive skill set that addresses rare forms of optic neuropathies. Her specialized clinic serves a unique subset of patients with complex visual pathway disorders. As an underrepresented minority in the field, Dr. Ross has made significant contributions to promote diversity and inclusion and is particularly interested in enhancing the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minorities in ophthalmology. Her research delves into the mechanisms underlying programmed cell death and extracellular and intracellular communication relevant to optic nerve diseases. Dr. Ross is also dedicated to improving clinical management of glaucoma through promising gene therapy techniques to reverse the processes that lead to cell death. She has published notable research on mitochondrial turnover and neurodegenerative treatments, reflecting her commitment to advancing ophthalmic care and knowledge.
