Biography

Dr. Ahmed J. Abushama is an Assistant Professor in Pediatrics at Queen's University. He earned his medical degree from Damascus University in 2011 and completed his residency in General Pediatrics in Jerusalem, Palestine. He further specialized in Pediatric Neurology through a fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto, which he completed in 2020, followed by a three-year fellowship in Pediatric Epilepsy Neurophysiology. His clinical expertise encompasses pediatric general neurology, with a focus on managing children with drug-resistant epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, and acquired brain injuries. Dr. Abushama's research interests include EEG, refractory epilepsy, surgical interventions, ketogenic diet, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), genetic epilepsy, and child neurology care in low-resource settings. He is dedicated to medical education and has received numerous awards for his contributions to teaching, including the Dr. Michael (Mickey) Lester Award for enhancing patient and family experience in pediatrics in June 2022, the Subspecialty Trainee Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching in June 2022, and the MD Program Teaching Award for Excellence for the 2021-2022 academic year from the University of Toronto MD Program.
