Biography

Ahmed Elghazouli is an Emeritus Professor in Structural Engineering at Imperial College London. He heads the Structures Section and serves as the Director of the MSc programme in Earthquake Engineering. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Structural Engineers. In 2016, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field. After graduating from Ain Shams University, he worked as a structural design engineer in the industry before completing his MSc with distinction and PhD in Structural Earthquake Engineering at Imperial College. He briefly worked as a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh before rejoining Imperial College to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in structural engineering. His main research interests focus on the response of structures to extreme loads, including structural earthquake engineering, structural fire engineering, and structural robustness. He has led various research projects and authored over 300 publications in these areas. Elghazouli has also served as a specialist consultant on numerous engineering projects globally and has participated in international code development committees formed by professional institutions and learned societies. He has previously held the position of Chairman of the Society for Earthquake Civil Engineering Dynamics (SECED) and is the UK National Delegate to the International and European Associations for Earthquake Engineering (IAEE EAEE). Currently, he chairs the British Standards Institution (BSI) Committee B/525/8 focused on seismic design.
