Biography

Ahmed Elghazouli is an Emeritus Professor of Structural Engineering at Imperial College London, where he has been a prominent figure in the field. He heads the Structures Section and serves as the Director of the MSc programme in Earthquake Engineering. As a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of both the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Structural Engineers, he has made significant contributions to engineering, which were recognized in 2016 when he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. After graduating from Ain Shams University, he gained extensive experience as a structural design engineer before completing his MSc with distinction and his PhD in Structural Earthquake Engineering at Imperial College. He briefly worked as a lecturer in Civil Engineering at the University of Edinburgh before returning to Imperial College. Professor Elghazouli has been engaged in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in structural engineering, emphasizing his research on the response of structures to extreme loads, specifically in areas such as structural earthquake engineering, structural fire engineering, and structural robustness. He has led numerous research projects and authored more than 300 publications in his field. Additionally, he has provided his expertise as a specialist consultant on various engineering projects globally and has participated in international code development committees, fostering collaboration across professional institutions and learned societies, including serving as the past Chairman of the Society for Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics (SECED) in the UK.
