Biography

Ahmed M Moustafa is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Alexandria University, Egypt, and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from Murdoch University, Australia. His research expertise is in SARS-CoV-2 genomics and evolution. Dr. Moustafa currently serves as Co-Director of the Center for Microbial Medicine and as Director of the CHOP Microbiome Sequencing Core, where he leads investigations into evolutionary microbiology and microbial genomics relating to infectious diseases. The Moustafa laboratory's primary goals include building a highly curated strain library of pathogenic and commensal microbes to fuel microbial genomics research, pinpointing molecular determinants of infectious diseases through big genomics data and novel bioinformatics tools, and enhancing the application of next-generation sequencing and microbial genomics through innovative educational approaches. His research interests include Microbial Genomics, Bioinformatics, Microbiome, Population Genetics, Phylogenetics, and Bacterial Pathogenesis.
