Dr. Aileen Das

Biography

Aileen Das is an Associate Professor in the Department of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan, focusing on Classical Studies, History, Middle East Studies, and Judaic Studies. She earned her PhD from the University of Warwick in 2013, and has been recognized for her significant contributions to the field, including the 2021 Goodwin Award for her monograph, "Galen Arabic Reception of Plato’s Timaeus" published by Cambridge University Press. Her research interests include Greco-Roman Islamicate medicine, philosophy, and the intersections of these fields with studies of science and technology. Das is currently engaged in preparing another monograph exploring the dynamics of Greco-Arabic studies in the 20th century, analyzing the works of Muslim and Jewish orientalists. Her publications cover a range of topics related to Greco-Roman medicine and philosophy, and she actively supervises graduate students. Das is noted for her critical engagement with the historiography of medicine, exploring how disciplines are defined and contested.
