Aileen received her undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Ulster, Coleraine, Northern Ireland, and completed her PhD in Medical Sciences at Uppsala University, Sweden. After undertaking postdoctoral studies at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard University, she returned to Sweden before starting a RCUK fellowship at King’s College, London in 2006. In January 2011, she took a position as a Lecturer in Pharmacology at King’s College London, and she is now a Professor in 2024. Her main research interests include improving islet transplantation outcomes and understanding how males and females respond differently to endoplasmic reticulum stress in pancreatic beta cells. As the head of the teaching department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Aileen is also involved in teaching in vivo skills and statistics. She is recognized as an expert educator by the British Pharmacology Society and is a fellow of the Research Animal Science Education Scheme.
