Biography

AJ Podlecki received classical training at Canisius High School in Buffalo, New York, and continued his education at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts, and the Universities of Oxford and Toronto. He held an appointment at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois from 1963 to 1966, followed by a position as department head at Penn State University. In 1975, he moved to the University of British Columbia, where he served as department head until 1986 and retired in 1998. After retirement, Podlecki held visiting professorships at Swarthmore College and the Universities of Nancy and Grenoble in France. He has published around 70 articles and 13 books, including some co-authored works, along with numerous reviews. His major research focus is on the interaction between literature and history in ancient Greece during the archaic and classical periods. Currently, he is working on a hope for a straightforward, readable translation of Aiskhylos’s tragedies, including Prometheus, with plans for revision and updating of his 1984 book on Early Greek Poets.
