Ajay Achath Mohanan's current research focuses on the design and fabrication of flexible high-performance ZnO-based surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors, integrating zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures as the sensing medium. Previously, he worked on the design of micro-fabricated rigid lithium niobate-based SAW devices utilizing a novel UV-LED photolithography technique. His work includes on-chip integration of self-seeded ZnO nanowires as a sensing medium, achieved through a thermal evaporation method at 600 °C. His research on transitioning rigid to flexible SAW sensors involves developing highly piezoelectric ZnO thin films on flexible polymer substrates, employing low-temperature growth methods and on-chip integration of ZnO nanostructures. He has performed growth of piezoelectric ZnO thin films on flexible substrates using RF magnetron sputtering and a low-temperature hydrothermal method for the on-chip growth of ZnO nanowires. Mohanan is also engaged in teaching courses related to computer organization programming and engineering design at Monash University, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through his academic and research efforts.
