Biography

Simple ideas can change the world, even if they are challenging to realize. With interdisciplinary skills, I enable different perspectives to turn basic concepts into realities that enhance the quality of life and promote equity in our community and planet. My approach combines servant leadership with a mission focused on business innovation. As an educator since 1995, I have published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and given more than 100 keynote speeches across the globe. I have received over 40 awards and hold over 22 patents—both domestic and international—largely for breakthroughs in materials and manufacturing. I have trained more than 60 graduate students and mentored over 1,250 undergraduate students, guiding them toward successful careers with leading corporations such as Apple and Google. Between 2002 and 2017, I built a team of engineers and scientists focused on nanomanufacturing, successfully translating ideas from research to industrial applications. My broad interests encompass manufacturing innovation and education, system integration, and the societal impacts of engineering.
