Biography

Ajay K. Mehrotra is a Professor of Law at the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law and an Affiliated Professor of History at Northwestern University. He currently serves as the Executive Director of the American Bar Foundation, which is an independent, non-profit research institute that focuses on the empirical interdisciplinary study of law and legal institutions. Mehrotra’s scholarship and teaching primarily focus on American legal, intellectual, and economic history, particularly in relation to tax law. His research explores the connections between law and political economy through a historical and comparative lens, with a focus on fiscal policy and state-building. Prior to his role at the American Bar Foundation and Northwestern, Mehrotra was a Professor of Law and History at Indiana University, Bloomington. He began his academic career after working in the Structured Finance department of J.P. Morgan's New York offices. Mehrotra holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Michigan, a J.D. from Georgetown University, and a Ph.D. in American History from the University of Chicago.
