Ajay Parasram is an Associate Professor in the Department of International Development Studies at Dalhousie University. His academic work is rooted in the themes of colonial, postcolonial, and anti-colonial studies, focusing on contemporary issues set against a historical backdrop. He has a deep interest in critical development studies and global history, particularly in the context of modern/colonial South Asia. His research explores the dynamics of racial fragility, structural white supremacy, and the quest for pluriversal sovereignty and state citizenship. As a Co-Investigator on a SSHRC Insight Grant-funded project, he examines the experiences of racialization among Asian international students in Canadian universities. Additionally, he teaches various courses that address the complexities of development studies and postcolonial politics, including seminars and modules that critically evaluate (neo)colonialism, the history of empire, and resistance movements. Prior to his current role, he served as Chair of the Global Development Section for the International Studies Association and was a Founding Fellow at the MacEachen Institute of Public Policy and Governance. Parasram’s work not only contributes to academic knowledge but also aims to engage and involve graduate students interested in similar themes.
