Biography

Ajit Tamhane is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences at Northwestern University, holding a courtesy appointment in Statistics. He previously served as Chairman of the IEMS Department from 2001 to 2008 and as Senior Associate Dean of the McCormick School of Engineering from 2008 to 2018. Tamhane obtained his BTech degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and both his MSc and PhD in Statistics and Operations Research from Cornell University. His research primarily focuses on statistical multiple testing procedures and their application in clinical trials and medical studies. He has published over 100 papers in top refereed journals and authored several books, including ‘Multiple Comparison Procedures’ and ‘Statistics for Data Analysis: Elementary to Intermediate.’ Tamhane has served as a co-editor for volumes on design experiments and multiple testing problems and is an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. His extensive contributions to the field have earned him distinguished recognition, including the Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT Bombay in 2017.
