Dr. Akihiro Nishi

Biography

Akihiro Nishi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. As a social epidemiologist and medical sociologist, his research specializes in social network analysis, network interventions, and evolutionary game theory. His work spans a broad range of topics including the investigation of economic inequality and its impact on well-being, as well as the dynamics of online social networks. Nishi has made significant contributions to developing network interventions to address the COVID-19 pandemic. He has evaluated the health outcomes associated with nationwide policies in aging societies, particularly in Japan, and has promoted motorcycle helmet use in Thailand. His research has garnered significant media attention, being featured in outlets such as CNN, NBC, PBS NewsHour, and NHK News. In addition to his research, Nishi teaches courses such as 'Epidemiologic Research Using R' and 'Social Network Analysis in Public Health.' He also leads the Nishi Lab, welcoming collaboration from researchers at various academic levels and seeking new research projects and partnerships.
