Dr. Akiko Chiba

Biography

Akiko Chiba is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at Duke University Medical Center, where she is also a member of the Duke Cancer Institute. As a breast surgical oncologist, she specializes in the care of patients with breast cancer and benign breast diseases, focusing on young patients and those with genetic mutations that increase risk. Her clinical interests encompass de-escalation of surgical treatment and the use of neoadjuvant therapies. She is currently studying the role of the microbiome in breast cancer and its potential to improve patient outcomes. Dr. Chiba serves as the Associate Program Director of the Duke Breast Surgery Fellowship Program and holds leadership positions in various national committees, including the Breast Committee of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology and the Editorial Committee of the Association of Women Surgeons.
