Biography

Akima Brackeen is an educator, designer, and researcher dedicated to promoting justice in the built environment. As an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Community Design Director at Architecture Public Benefit, Akima is a member of the leadership team for the Equity Architecture Education Consortium (EAEC). His research focuses on water access while challenging racial perceptions and values associated with waterscapes, aiming to transform engagement with contested sites through speculative interventions and narrative generation for community activations. Previously, he worked on multi-family affordable housing projects in the office of David Baker Architects in San Francisco, California, and collaborated on a proposal for an art education center with MASS Design in Kigali, Rwanda. He was the inaugural Rowe Fellow at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago, where he taught undergraduate housing studios and led a seminar course analyzing the aquatic milieu, its history, and the imaginaries that translate and spatialize Black narratives within music and literature. Akima consistently leverages design, research, and teaching to serve and advocate for marginalized communities, collaborating with organizations that strive to positively impact their communities.
