Biography

Akintunde Akinwande is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He earned his B.Sc. in Electrical Electronic Engineering from the University of Ife, Nigeria in 1978, followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1981 and 1986, respectively. Akinwande began his career at Honeywell Inc. in 1986, where he researched GaAs Complementary FET technology for high-speed, low-power signal processing, and later focused on pressure sensors, accelerometers, and thin-film field emission display devices. Joining MIT’s Microsystems Technology Laboratories (MTL) in January 1995, his research interests include micro-fabrication of electronic devices, particularly in smart sensors, actuators, intelligent displays, large area electronics (macro-electronics), field emission and field ionization devices, mass spectrometry, and electric propulsion. Akinwande has received numerous accolades including the 1996 National Science Foundation (NSF) Career Award and has authored over 100 journal publications. He also holds many patents in MEMS, electronics, and display technologies, and served as a visiting professor at the University of Cambridge's Engineering Department as an Overseas Fellow at Churchill College from 2002 to 2003. He is currently a member of the IEEE Nanotechnology Council.
