Dr. Akshay Sharma

Biography

Akshay Sharma is an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan School of Nursing, specializing in infectious disease epidemiology and public health. He holds a M.B.B.S. and an M.P.H. degree, alongside a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from Emory University. His research extensively focuses on HIV and STI prevention, particularly among sexual and gender minorities, with interests in remote health interventions and behavior change. Dr. Sharma has designed and evaluated innovative methods for increasing HIV and STI testing among these populations, emphasizing telehealth and home self-testing solutions. Throughout his career, he has committed to community health by promoting safe sex practices and enhancing access to barrier contraceptives, particularly in India. As an educator, he is recognized for fostering an interactive learning environment and has received several teaching awards, including the Mae Edna Doyle Teacher of the Year Award and the Inclusive Teaching Award from the University of Michigan. Dr. Sharma’s work has led him to collaborate with diverse groups of students, fostering inclusivity and engagement in public health disciplines.
