Dr. Alain Pluen

Biography

Alain Pluen is a physical chemist and Senior Lecturer in the Division of Pharmacy at the University of Manchester, where he has been since 2000. He investigates protein-protein interactions and solutions formulation issues related to biologics, such as monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). His research utilizes advanced bioimaging techniques, including confocal microscopy and light scattering methods. Pluen's current focus includes the development of RNA lipid nanoparticles and improving their shelf life and delivery efficiency of antimicrobials. He holds a Ph.D. in Polymer Physical Chemistry from the University of Strasbourg and has substantial experience in the biomedical engineering field through previous roles at Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of Strasbourg. Pluen collaborates widely with experts within and outside his institution, having numerous publications that address the stability of biopharmaceuticals and peptide therapies. He is a member of several professional bodies, including the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Higher Education Academy. His commitment extends beyond research to mentoring and engaging with students, particularly through summer placements and school governance.
