Alalea Kia is a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow with the Royal Academy Engineering and serves as an Associate Research Fellow in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. Her research interests are focused on cleantech and the mitigation of the damaging effects of climate change, particularly in the transformation of the construction sector towards net-zero. Her work encompasses urban flood mitigation and adaptation, sustainable drainage systems, and the application of permeable concrete pavements under extreme weather loading scenarios. Additionally, she engages in additive manufacturing and multi-scale experimental and numerical modeling methods, as well as the durability of cement-based materials and the development of new low-carbon cementitious materials. Alalea was chosen as one of the 'Top 50 Women in Engineering' in 2022 by the Women's Engineering Society and has received numerous accolades, including the Hawley Award for Engineering Innovation from the Worshipful Company of Engineers and the President’s Medal for Excellence in Research from Imperial College London in 2023. She has been selected as the RAEng Young Engineer of the Year for 2024 and has received the Sir George MacFarlane Medal.
