Biography

Alan Bovik is an adjunct professor holding the Cockrell Family Regents Endowed Chair and the Cockrell Family Dean's Chair for Engineering Excellence in the Chandra Family Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. He directs the Laboratory for Image Video Engineering (LIVE). His research interests include digital television, digital photography, visual perception, and image video processing, concentrating on creating new theories and algorithms that allow for perceptually optimized streaming and sharing of visual media. His work has significant implications for ensuring visual satisfaction for billions of viewers worldwide while substantially reducing global bandwidth consumption. He has published over 1,000 technical articles in his fields and is cited more than 175,000 times in the literature; he has an H-index of 135 and is recognized as a Highly-Cited Researcher by the Web of Science Group. His notable books include the "Handbook of Image Video Processing" and "Modern Image Quality Assessment." Professor Bovik has received numerous prestigious awards, including the John Fritz Medal, IEEE Edison Medal, and the Primetime Emmy® Award for his contributions to the field of image and video quality assessment. He is a Life Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of the Optical Society of America, among other honors.
