Dr. Alan Cienki

Biography

Alan Cienki is a Full Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializing in Language Use and Cognition. His academic background includes a Ph.D. from Brown University and extensive research interests in cognitive linguistics, semantics, gesture studies, and multimodal communication. He has contributed significantly to the field through various roles, including President of the International Society for Gesture Studies and the founder of the Multimodal Communication Cognition Lab at the university. His teaching includes coordination of the English Language Communication Studies track at the BA level and the Multimodal Communication track at the MA level. Cienki has been involved in numerous research grants and projects, focusing on integrating cognitive, functional, and multimodal aspects of spoken language. He has a proven record in academic collaborations and has presented his research in several conferences and lectures. His work aims to advance the understanding of gestures and their linguistic impact in communication.
