Biography

Alan Edelman is a Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he is also the lead of the MIT Julia Lab. He obtained his PhD in 1989 and focuses on scientific computing, numerical linear algebra, random matrices, and scientific machine learning. Edelman's research contributions have greatly advanced high-performance computing and numerical computation techniques. He pioneered the creation of the Julia programming language alongside his colleagues Jeff Bezanson, Stefan Karpinski, and Viral B. Shah, addressing the long-standing issue of using multiple languages for computing. Julia combines the ease of Python with the speed of C and is actively used in various prominent institutions including MIT and Stanford, as well as leading companies like BlackRock and Pfizer. Edelman's work has received multiple accolades including the James H. Wilkinson Prize for Numerical Software and the IEEE Computer Society Sidney Fernbach Award for his outstanding contributions to high-performance computing. He is also a fellow of several prestigious organizations such as the ACM, SIAM, AMS, and IEEE.
