Dr. Alan Friedman

Biography

Alan Warren Friedman is the Arthur J. Thaman Wilhelmina Doré Thaman Professor in the Department of English at the University of Texas at Austin. He specializes in modern British, Irish, and American literature, particularly focusing on the novel and Shakespearean drama. Friedman has authored five books, including "Party Pieces: Oral Narrative Social Performance Joyce Beckett" and "Fictional Death Modernist Enterprise," the latter examining cultural and literary attitudes towards death. He has edited works such as "Samuel Beckett Black Red" and "Situating College English: Pedagogy Politics American University," which explores cultural issues in higher education. He coordinates the annual residency program for Actors from the London Stage and advises student organizations like the Spirit of Shakespeare. Over his career, Friedman has earned several teaching awards, including the Chad Oliver Teaching Award and the Faculty Service Award from the English Department. He completed his Ph.D. in English at the University of Rochester in 1966.
