Biography

Alan W. Friedman is the Thaman Endowed Professor of English Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin. He specializes in modern British, Irish, and American literature, with particular emphasis on the novel and Shakespearean drama. Over his distinguished career, he has authored seven books, including 'Shakespeare’s Returning Warriors' and 'Surreal Beckett: Samuel Beckett, James Joyce, Surrealism.' Friedman has also edited significant volumes such as 'Modernism Literature: Introduction Reader' and has co-edited several special journal issues focused on Joyce and Beckett. He has actively participated in promoting academic freedom and faculty governance, and his dedication to teaching has earned him multiple awards including the President’s Associates Teaching Excellence Award and UT's Civitatis Award. In addition, he coordinated an annual residency program for actors from the London Stage for 20 years and has advised organizations that support Shakespearean performance.
