Biography

Alan Jamieson is a Professor at the Oceans Institute and the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Western Australia, and the founding Director of the Minderoo UWA Deep Sea Research Centre. With 25 years of experience in deep-sea science and technology exploration, he initiated Oceanlab at the University of Aberdeen, progressing from mechanical technician to senior lecturer in Marine Biology between 2000 and 2016. He then moved to Newcastle University as a senior lecturer in Marine Ecology from 2016 to 2021. Alan earned his PhD in 2004, focusing on Autonomous Lander Technology for Biological Research at Abyssal and Hadal Depths. Renowned as an expert in the Hadal Zone, he has published over 150 peer-reviewed scientific papers and a monograph on the Hadal Zone. He has participated in 70 deep-sea expeditions and has pioneered the design and construction of full ocean depth Hadal-Landers. His research aims to explore the Hadal Zone through various ecological and technological lenses to overcome challenges posed by extreme depths and hydrostatic pressure. His work directly supports several UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in education and marine conservation.
