Alan F. Lynch received his Bachelor of Applied Science degree with honors in Engineering Science (Electrical option) from the University of Toronto in 1991. He completed his Master of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering at the University of British Columbia in 1994 under the supervision of Professor S.E. Salcudean, followed by a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1999 under Dr. S.A. Bortoff. From 1999 to 2001, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Institute for Control Theory and Control Engineering at the Technical University of Dresden in Germany, working with Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. J. Rudolph. In 2001, he became a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta and is currently a Professor. He served as a Visiting Professor and Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow at the Institute for Systems Theory and Control Engineering at the University of Stuttgart in 2009-2010. He is a member of IEEE and a Professional Engineer in Alberta. Professor Lynch is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Intelligent Robotic Systems (Springer). His research, which began with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in 2004, is focused on applied nonlinear control, particularly in robotics, with an emphasis on UAVs.
