Biography

Alan McGaughey is a Trustee Professor in the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He leads the Nanoscale Transport Phenomena Laboratory, where his research focuses on understanding transport phenomena such as mass, momentum, and energy at the atomic level, particularly through studying the behavior of phonons, photons, electrons, and fluid particles. His work in mechanical engineering draws on physics, materials science, and chemistry, and he is involved in developing and applying molecular and meso-scale simulation techniques. He collaborates closely with experimental research groups and has been recognized for his contributions to the field, including a 2009 Young Investigator Award from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. McGaughey received a Bachelor of Engineering from McMaster University in 1998, a Master of Applied Science from the University of Toronto in 2000, and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 2004. He has been at Carnegie Mellon since 2005, following a post-doctoral position at the University of Florida. His innovative teaching has earned him the Benjamin Richard Teare Teaching Award in 2014, and he has been voted Professor of the Year by mechanical engineering seniors multiple times. He has also published significant research, including work on the effects of rotational disorder on the thermal conductivity of superatomic structures.
